A stereotactic breast biopsy is an image guided breast biopsy using a digital mammogram as the image guidance system. Through a 1/4 inch puncture, a probe is inserted into the breast under local anesthesia. Small cores of tissue are removed so that the area of suspicion may be examined under a microscope to see if cancer is present.
